How does it work?
Loft and roof insulation work by re-directing the heat that would escape from your home through the roof back into your home. The insulation often made of Glass or Rock Wool, Blown Cellulose or Quilted Mineral Wool is laid between the joints to act as a barrier for the heat slowing down the transfer of heat between your living space and the outside world.
Even with insulation laid between and across the joists, you can still have a usable space by laying boards across this. This can be done by any qualified joiner who will raise the joist levels with one of a variety of products, this will allow for useful storage space for other household goods. Are there any risks?
Insulation stops heat from escaping from living spaces, so it will make your loft space cooler – which could make existing damp or condensation problems worse. Get professional advice before installing insulation, to see if you can fix the damp problems first.
Insulating between the joists of your loft will keep your house warmer but make the roof space above colder. Pipes and water tanks will be more likely to freeze, so you will need to insulate them. Heat Insulation provides this within the funding obtained for you. The cooler air in your insulated loft could mean that cold draughts come through the loft hatch. To prevent this, we install UPVC strips of draught-excluding material around the edges of the frame.

It is possible to insulate your loft yourself, providing it does not have any damp problem, is not a flat roof and is easy to access. However, we don’t recommend you do this as electric cables and ventilation must be treated in a specific way to avoid damage to your property.

How can I tell if my loft is already insulated?
As with other insulation product you can usually tell if you need insulation if you have high heating bills and struggle to warm the house. It is always best to have a survey conducted by a qualified professional to establish your insulation needs. If you wanted to check yourself simply going into your loft space and see if the insulation wool in between the joists. If you do have boarded down insulation that may be underneath this, you may have to lift one of these to check.
