loft & roof Insulation
Loft insulation prevents heat from escaping through the roof, saving up to 25% on bills. Mineral or glass wool is layered between the joists, with an additional layer cross-laid at right angles to achieve the required depth of 270mm (11 inches). If the loft is easily accessible and free from dampness, insulation is straightforward.

Loft & Roof Insulation
Most of the heat lost in a property is lost through the roof. Loft insulation can help to retain heat in your home and reduce your energy bills by as much as 25%, saving you money in the long term as roof insulation can last for up to 40 years. We are often asked how much loft insulation costs. Roof insulation can typically be funded by the energy-saving scheme and the price of loft insulation will often depend on the type of loft insulation used. Attic insulation can consist of glass, rock wool, blown cellulose, or quilted mineral wool.
Our experienced and friendly loft insulation installers will come to your property and assess the amount of room between the joists on the loft floor. They will then advice on which type of roof insulation material should be used and how best to create the most space in your attic so that you have adequate room for storage. Here at Heat Insulation, we have had over 30 years of experience installing loft and roof insulation and have happily answered hundreds of queries to help improve homes. We have pulled together our most popular questions, to provide you with a helpful guide on the cost of loft insulation, the loft insulation installation process, and the savings you can make from investing in suitable and sufficient roof insulation.
How does it work?
Loft and roof insulation work by re-directing the heat that would escape from your home through the roof back into your home. The insulation often made of Glass or Rock Wool, Blown Cellulose or Quilted Mineral Wool is laid between the joints to act as a barrier for the heat slowing down the transfer of heat between your living space and the outside world.
Even with insulation laid between and across the joists, you can still have a usable space by laying boards across this. This can be done by any qualified joiner who will raise the joist levels with one of a variety of products, this will allow for useful storage space for other household goods. This is a service Heat Insulation can offer.
Are there any risks?
Insulation stops heat from escaping from living spaces, so it will make your loft space cooler – which could make existing damp or condensation problems worse. Get professional advice before installing insulation, to see if you can fix the damp problems first.
Insulating between the joists of your loft will keep your house warmer but make the roof space above colder. Pipes and water tanks will be more likely to freeze, so you will need to insulate them. Heat Insulation provides this within the funding obtained for you. The cooler air in your insulated loft could mean that cold draughts come through the loft hatch. To prevent this, we install UPVC strips of draught-excluding material around the edges of the frame.

Loft & Roof Insulation Installation Process
It is possible to insulate your loft yourself, providing it does not have any damp problem, is not a flat roof and is easy to access. However, we don’t recommend you do this as electric cables and ventilation must be treated in a specific way to avoid damage to your property.
We use the highest standard of insulation to ensure maximum efficiency. This cannot be bought from your local DIY store meaning doing it yourself may not always prove the best results.
Usually, completion of the insulation can be done within a few hours, and the benefits can be felt almost instantly.
Can I benefit from Loft Insulation?
Most people can benefit from loft insulation and with grants and funding from Energy Companies and the Local Council it can be a very cheap way to lower your energy bills.
Will it cost me?
New government funding is available for those meeting the criteria, meaning it could cost you nothing. To be eligible you must be a landlord, own or privately rent your property and be claiming benefits, for those who don’t meet the criteria there are finance options to help spread the cost.
How can I tell if my loft is already insulated?
As with other insulation product you can usually tell if you need insulation if you have high heating bills and struggle to warm the house. It is always best to have a survey conducted by a qualified professional to establish your insulation needs. If you wanted to check yourself simply going into your loft space and see if the insulation wool in between the joists. If you do have boarded down insulation that may be underneath this, you may have to lift one of these to check.
